Queer Partner Dancing Workshop

from $15.00
Sold Out

Gender neutral instruction is business as usual for Amanda’s classes & events. What makes this event unique is the amount of time dedicated to practicing both dance roles along with the opportunity for Q&A regarding sexuality and gender in contemporary social dancing.

7-7:45pm Introduction to Partner Dancing (ELEF): Learn basic principles of sharing momentum with a partner using a series of exercises where everyone will get to practice leading and following (ELEF). These concepts will be common to most forms of partnered movement including Latin dance, ballroom styles, acro yoga, and contact improvisation.

7:45 - 8:15pm Half Hour Break: Take a break to get to know the other dancers in class! Use this opportunity to grab a snack from next door or a drink at the bar (non-alcoholic drinks are available). Snacks & drinks are not included in your ticket.

8:15 - 9pm Swing & Blues Moves for Jazz Night: Choose a dance role (lead or follow) and get ready to upgrade your slow dancing technique. We will focus on moves inspired by vintage swing dancing and authentic blues idioms to give your dancing a cool vibe to match live jazz or blues night at the local bar, brewery, or cocktail lounge.

About Partners

  • You do not need to bring a partner; it is normal to rotate partners in a group social dance class so you will get to practice with many new people.

  • Consent is crucial in partner dancing, you will never be forced to partner with other people. If you’re uncomfortable with rotating, please come with your own partner and be prepared to decline an invitation to dance.

About Pricing

  • This event has been priced to fairly compensate the instructors and the venue for hosting, while also limiting class size to allow for personalized attention.

  • Any net proceeds from class will be donated to The Frederick Center

  • A number of tickets are available at a lower rate. If the lower rate sells out, or still presents a barrier to participation, then please contact Amanda to be added to a wait list.

This event is for LGBTQ+ Dancers, Queer Dancers, Trans Dancers. Allies from the local dance community are welcomed to participate.

Dance Roles

In traditional social dance, men lead, and women follow. Fortunately, in contemporary Swing & Blues Dance there are no gender restrictions on dance roles. Dancers are invited to select whichever role they prefer, regardless of gender expression. See the brief descriptions below to help you decide which position is right for you:

  • Leaders are responsible for initiating momentum and managing floor craft.

  • Followers are responsible for executing lead movements and inspiring musicality.

  • Switch refers to experienced dancers who intend to practice both roles. Dancers who switch should contact Amanda for private class options that can address the unique challenges of this role.

  • Rotating partners is the best way to learn but dancers will NOT be forced to practice with strangers.

Staying Healthy:

  • Proof of vaccination is not currently required.

  • Dancers are welcome to wear masks, but they are not currently required.

  • Please bring a face mask with you. If someone else is wearing a mask, assume that you need to wear yours when talking and dancing with them.
